Staring at the clock. Tossing and turning. Your mind just won’t shut off. Most of us have experienced insomnia sometime in our lives. Busy schedules, stress in our life, computer activity, no time for exercise, overeating – are just some factors that can add to insomnia. However, continually having issues falling asleep at night or not being able to shut off your mind, can become more than just an inconvenience. It can begin to affect the quality of your health, cause you to be tired during the day and affect the quality of your life. Sleep is as important as breathing in our life so if you are continually being effected by not being get a good night’s sleep, it’s time to talk to a sleep doctor.

Insomniacs have problems either falling asleep or staying asleep. Specifically, they can exhibit: delayed sleep onset, frequent, prolonged arousals during the night, early morning awakenings or low quality sleep.
Individuals can exhibit either primary or secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is typically associated with stress and is not associated with other mental or medical problems. Secondary insomnia is the result of underlying problems such as anxiety, mood disorders or medical conditions such as restless legs syndrome or sleep apnea.

Most people have experienced insomnia during temporary periods of stress in their life. This is termed acute or short-term insomnia and is usually resolved on its own. However, if the problem persists for more than four weeks, professional advice should be sought.
